Gore Street Community Garden
The Mission Hill Health Movement has responded to community demands in 2016 for a Community Garden at 6-8 Gore Street. Since it was designated tentative developer in June 2018, the MHHM has been refining the initial plan in order to become the property owner in July 2019.
The vision for the Gore St Community Garden is to make a true community space that includes:
The garden will also have required open hours during certain daytimes which will allow people a place to sit outside. At its May 2019 Board Meeting, the MHHM adopted rules for operating the Gore St Community Garden to allow for smooth operation and
In Winter 2019, the MHHM worked with Landscape Design Laura Feddersen to develop a final plan and budget. Ms. Fedderson will also oversee the construction of the Garden. She will lead the Garden Committee through the material and contractor selection process to have construction begin late summer 2019.
The current plan shows berry bushes along the Gore St fence and 22 raised beds, including 3 that are wheel chair assessible. The MHHM has decided that a few beds will be available for "community gardening" for people who want to garden occasionally without a commitment to a gardening plot for a whole season. The MHHM has also reached out to the ABCD Head Start and Daycare to invite them to have a garden plot and learn to grow food. The remainder of the plots will be available for a 3 year term for community members. MHHM will allocate plots on a system for residents to use them for three years. The MHHM wants all residents to have a chance to raise fresh fruits and vegetables.
In May 2019, the City of Boston granted the MHHM PIP: Grassroots to fund in the amount of $62,000 for the construction of the Gore St Community Garden Wentworth Institute of Technology students will construct and donate the raised beds. The Mission Hill Health Movement is raising the remaining $10,000 in construction costs from foundations and individual donors. Please donate to this important neighborhood project.
Water to the 6-8 Gore Street Community Garden was initially going to be a challenge. In Spring of 2019, the City of Boston decided it should be responsible for making a water connection to the site as it is conveying the property for Garden purposes. The City plans to do this in a timely manner.
